Hi there,
I am coming to Australia and specifically the State of Victoria in the next 12 weeks or so. I need some advice. Is it worthwhile trying to find employment from here (SA) or are you just irretating potential employers with your CV and aplication. I am a qualified townplanner by the way. There are vacancies at local authorities but thus far I get the thanks but not thanks answer to my applications. Not sure if it is because I am still in SA. I would love to hear some thoughts on the matter.
Thanks

Hello satisne, and welcome to Great Trek! :welcome2:
The majority of people I talk to get the same answer when they apply from South Africa - "call us when you get to Australia..."
But that being said - this mostly occurs in generic markets where there are plenty of other candidates to consider - finance, IT, engineering, etc, and they're not too stretched for finding somebody to employ.
I think that being a town planner is a more specific occupation, and there aren't many around, so if a council is looking to fill a position and can't find the candidate internally, they'll go external.
I definitely think it's worth still looking for work whilst you're still in SA, I've met plenty of people who were accepted for a position having not set foot in Australia, usually then visas and things happen pretty quickly as the company is so keen to get the candidate on board that they are prepared to help with arrangements or costs. Like I said, usually these are occupations where there is a shortage.
Bear in mind that in Australia it's by far a candidates market at the moment - too many jobs advertised, not enough candidates, so for somebody looking for work, things are good.
I just did a search on Seek (http://www.seek.com.au)for "town planner" and it seems that there's no shortage of work - plenty of pages came up.
What sites are you using for Job searches?
That's my 2c. Best of luck and please stick around.:thumbs

All that Ican add is that you should keep on applying. I am aware of people (not in your profession, though0, who kept on e-mailing their resume's to the tune of about 200 until they got a positive response.
Depending on your priorities, you should also consider possible locations other than large cities. In some work-spheres it's often easier to land a job in a country/rural location than in a city.
My rule of thumb says that the more you spread your resume around, the quicker something may happen for you.
Cheers,
LJ
