View Full Version : Taking furniture to Aus from the UK
Friends of mine are relocating to Australia in December.
They want to know what kinds of furniture do they need to take with them from here.
What would you say would be cheaper to buy in the Ukay than in Aus?
Stuff like for instance Fridge Freezers, etc?

Howzit ICE...
I think it’s much of a muchness I think.
Electrical goods, I would probably buy in Australia. The UK has cheap electrical goods because of economies of scale, but Aus is also fairly reasonable in this regard because it’s close to Aisa where most of this stuff comes from.
A lot of electrical goods are built for Australian conditions (for example, a freezer that usually lives in the garage – the garage can easily get to 40 or 50 degrees in summer, you wouldn’t want the freezer packing up on you)
Another thing is, you technically can’t change a plug in Australia – a sparky has to do it (serious!) so if you brought all your appliances over, you’d either have to run them off adapters or change the plugs.
(sure you CAN change a plug yourself, but if for example, your fridge blows up and burns your house down, insurance wouldn’t pay because the fridge wasn’t signed off by a sparky)
We didn’t really bring furniture over to Aus when we moved from the UK – just a couple of “nicer” things that would cost a lot to replace, like my Hi-Fi. We figured if it’s something we’re attached to, we brought it with, if it’s something we can replace, we’ll buy it here.
They have Ikea in Australia, but it’s not as cheap as the UK Ikeas.
In terms of furniture, it’s a huge market over here with a lot of furniture stores. The general rule is you get what you pay for they have the full range from cheap and nasty to expensive and good quality.
Where are they moving to? Are they shipping a container anyway? (I’d say if you’re shipping a container anyway, bring your furniture as it’s cheaper than buying)
Thanx OneTime!
Moving to Queensland, and yes they are bringing a container.
I will let them know. Or no, I will introduce them to the site!!
